OK, here you can see the addition of landing gear and the wing pitch contorllers (green). The landing gear will be minimal, but it has to be tall enough so that at the bottom of the flap the wing tips don't touch the ground. (see bottom image)

A heron sort of launches itself damn near VOTAL, but I'm assuming more an albatross 'running' take off. Flapping better product both positive lift and forward thrust. According to

Blue elements are aluminum tubing; so is the green 'pitch control' tube. The red lines are either nylon or cable.
